Artificial Intelligence: Bioethical Considerations and LimitationsReflections on "For the Life of the World"
Inaugural Event 11-23-23
A dialogue on "AI, Bioethics and Orthodoxy" discussing Ethics, AI, religion, and emotion on Thanksgiving Day 2023, is part of a new Bioethics and Orthodoxy series (via zoom) that I am putting on through my role as Director of the Division of Bioethics, at the Research Center of the Orthodox Academy of Crete (under the auspices of the Ecumenical Patriarchate).
For this inaugural one, I will be in conversation with Prof. Manolis Kellis from MIT (in Greek), a leading scientist in AI and an Orthodox Christian (parishioner at Sts. Constantine and Helen in Cambridge), who was recently awarded the highest distinction in Science from the President of the Hellenic Republic.

A sincere and heartfelt thank you very much to everyone who registered for the first conversation in the "Bioethics and Orthodoxy" series on AI (Artificial Intelligence), and those who participated in the live dialogue. We -and I personally- were honored by your presence.
My sincere thanks also to the Secretary General for Higher Education of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs of the Hellenic Republic, Prof. Odyssea-Ioanni Zora for his intervention, as well as the Director of OAK, Dr. Konstantino Zorba for his invitation to organize the Bioethics Division at the Orthodox Academy and his mediation and introduction last week.
Our event, the inaugural offered by the Division of Bioethics of the Orthodox Academy of Crete, had the distinct honor of having the presence - or through a representative or message – of leaders of the Orthodox Church, from 3 different continents:
- Archbishop of America, Mr. Elpidophoros, (appointed the Rev. Dr. Fr. Ioannis Chryssavgis, Archdeacon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, and Director of the Huffington Ecumenical Institute at Hellenic College Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology as his representative) We also warmly thank Protopresbyter Fr. Panagiotis Papazafiropoulos, Director of the Office of the Archbishop for his communication and response.
- Metropolitan Ambrosios of Korea and Exarch of Japan.
- Metropolitan of Mesogaia and Lavreotiki, Mr. Nikolaos (through a personal message from him and reference by Prof. Manolis Kellis and me)
Let us also thank Gerontissa (Abbess) Theoxeni from our beloved monastery in Chania, the Holy Patriarchal Monastery of Chrysopigi, who sent Sister Theopneusti as a representative.
We will let you all know about the next conversation in our series, which will take place in January, and will be announced in the near future.
